Can't We Just Sort It All Out In Purgatory? Feb 28 2009
"Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment." - Hebrews 9:27
It would be nice if we could sort it out in purgatory, but there's a big problem with that idea. The idea of purgatory is not found in the Holy Scriptures. It's a concept found in the Apocrypha - Jewish books of sacred writings - that were never believed to be on the level of Holy Scripture. Some may ask, "What's purgatory?" One definition is to be in "limbo" after you gie.
So, what does Scripture say happens when we die? The above-referenced scripture, Hebrews 9:27 says, "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment." God makes a judgment on whether we'll spend eternity with Him in Heaven or spend eternity separated from Him in Hell. There's no in between holding zone. When we die, it's one or the other.
So, what would it take for God to make the judgment that we deserve eternal life in Heaven with Him? Two ways:
1. Be perfect. Which is bad news - only one man has been perfect and it ain't you.
2. Believe in the perfect man who gave His life for every single sin in your life and mine. Jesus is that man. He paid the penalty for our sins, so that if we trust Him as our only hope of being judged by God to receive eternal life - we'll pass.
If you died today, what judgment would it be? Heaven or Hell?

Yes, report it Nevermindexcuse my ignorance but I have to asked several questions of the ministers on this site. I do believe when we die we are with Jesus but there is a lingering question about judgement day."When the dead in Christ shall rise and meet Him in the air" Is that just speaking to our physical bodies joining our spiritual bodies? When is Judgement day ? Is it right after we die? Thanks for the information

Yes, report it NevermindJenny, I think that is right. It is clear in scripture that when we die, believers immediately go to be with the lord, although not in the body. It is not as clear to me where non-believers go at that point. I think you are right, that at the judgement, all will be reunited with their physical bodies to face judgement from God. Believers will have the righteousness of Christ applied to their account, so will then live eternally with God. Those who wanted nothing to do with God here on earth will have that choice ratified, as they will spend eternity separated from God.

Yes, report it NevermindJenny, To answer your question rightly, we have to write several pages, but in short--. According to the scriptures when a person dies, if they are saved their spirit goes to paradise while they body rests in the sleep of death. If they are lost their spirit goes to hell (the rich man and Lazerus). When Christ comes to rapture the church he will not touch the ground, but according to 2Thess: the dead believers will rise first and then we believers who are alive shall leave the ground and we shall meet him in the air and will be transported to heaven where we will take part in the marriage supper for seven years while the tribulation is taking place, and then we will come back with Christ while he sits upon his throne, and reigns for the thousand years, then we will go with him to the New Heaven to spend eternity with him praising him for he is worthy. God bless you and your zeal to know his word.

Observe Eriks pattern for dirupting this website:
1. He will post a perfectly legitimate question or comment.
2. Someone will answer him, usually using words that may include "faith", "Hply Spirit", or "Scripture" somewhere in their answer.
3. Erik will pounce on once concept that has been brought out, mocking it because it's origins come from some "sheepherders" or Person that has been unproven (his standard) to have existed.
4. Others will then be motivated to challenge him and defend their beliefs.
5. Erik esculates, usually into a subject that bears no resenblance to the origional subject.
6. JCO chimes in, calling all Christians "fools."
7. The other people on the forum debate, eventually getting frustrated and declaring they will no longer participate in a discussion with the "Stir-It-Up Twins" (sounds like a wrestling team, doesn't it?)
8. Erik declares, "I win!" in a moment of unusual maturity and logic.
Come on, folks! Let's quit getting sucked in to this silliness. Let Erik and Jonathan have their hobby, let them post if they wish. But let's not fall victim to their game. If they post, ignore them. Don't challenge or debate. Let's save this wonderful forum for all who want to hold a real discussion of the topic from a Christian perspective, or for those who are sincerely seeking.

Yes, report it NevermindWe talk about the good life that we have lived. We talk about the wonderful affect we've had on other people. And we talk about the differnce we've made to the world through learning and the progression of knowledge.
We certainly don't talk about fictious views of the afterlife and our position vis-a-vis Heaven vs. Hell. We don't talk about fictious nonsense.

Yes, report it NevermindJCO-I think your first paragraph was sincere, although I don't see how it constitutes a very powerful life purpose belief.
Your second paragraph betrays an anger that must have something to do with why you monitor this website so closely. I continue to pray for you.

Yes, report it NevermindOur end times views doesn't have a thing to do with our salvation. If a person doesn't accept Christ, it doesn't matter what they think will happen at the end of the world, hell will be their home. Again I aplaud everyones efforts to learn more about our precious Lords word. Keep searching the scriptures and God will reveal it to us as we are ready. God bless everyone and I hope everyone has a great service tomorrow.

Yes, report it NevermindErik, that's because we know that you know the scriptures well enough to know ICor.15:35-55 paraphrased -that just as we have a natural body that we would have spirtual bodies That our dying bodies are transformed into ones that never die. In other words whether our bodies are destroyed by fire whether cremation, house fire, whatever or we die from natural causes and natural decompostion happens that the God who made the universe can certainly recreate our bodies any well he pleases. Nuff said

Yes, report it NevermindTo all - - We we believers die, our soul is immediately in Paridise with Jesus. When a non-believer dies their soul is immediately in Sheol / Hades absent from Jesus. At the end times, during tribulation Jesus will come down in the clouds and call up all believers, first the dead will be resurrected and the living will be raptured. All believers will transformed in their glorified bodies and will be with Jesus forever. The non-believers will be resurredted after the Millenium, and after the Great White Throne Judgment will be cast into Hell for eternity. - - Ben
