Solomon on Leadership III: A CLEAR MISSION Mar 16 2009

"I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the LORD my God, as the LORD told my father David, when he said, 'Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.'" - 1 Kings 5:5

Now the first thing to understand about Solomon is that God's mission for him was clear from the very beginning. He was to build a great temple for the Lord. Now interestingly, Solomon's father, David, also had the same vision, but it was not his mission to carry it out. God knew David was a warrior, not a builder, and so He saved this particular goal for David's son, Solomon.

Solomon gave the goal and the mission to the people of Israel, helped them to understand what his mission was and challenged them to carry out it out. The timing was right for this. The enemies had been defeated. It was a time to follow God's will.

Are you clear on your life mission? Are you clear on your life's purpose? Can you express it in a brief sentence just like Solomon could? Are you clear on your organization's mission and the role you are to play in that goal? Are you very clear about some God-given goals, goals that God has given you to help fulfill that mission? Are you communicating that mission clearly? Follow Solomon's example; begin with a clear mission and communicate that mission to those who are helping you meet that goal. It's an absolute key to successful living.

Today's comments should be interesting. I just had to close down my business yesterday, so I'm giving this one a lot of thought.

I know that the Main Mission is "To love the Lord my God with all my heart, and all my strength, and all my mind, and to love my neighbor as myself". That doesn't change.

My vocation does/has changed several times over my 63 years. As I pray about what comes next, I ask to have the patience to wait on the Lord to guide me, and the discernment to trust and obey what I "hear".

This is a common endeavor in these times. I pray for all of you who are "in the same boat".

When Jesus was young He said He had to be about His Father's business (Luke 3:49). That is a good example to follow for all Christians. It certainly relates to being available for whatever God needs at any moment. The Christian life should not be static but is dynamic according to God's will and plans. Grant, you have a wonderful opportunity to shine the light of Jesus in the lives of neighbors who are in the same boat. Based on what I have seen of you on this website I believe you will be a great encourager for those who are feeling themselves to be in a dark pit as they are unemployed. God bless you as you wait for God's next assignment. Keep the faith!

Grant- what is/was your business? I know this devotion goes out to thousands; maybe someone has some resources that would be helpful.

Grant, David tells us that he has never seen God's seed begging bread in the street nor the righteous forsaken. I know where you are coming from. I have been in buisness for myself for about 35 years and when you have to shut down the buisness, it does leave you perplexed as to what you will do. I will be praying for you that God will lead you.
Eric, you were slammed, and it wasn't right, I am sorry for what was posted.
Austin, there is an old saying, "you can catch more flies with honey than you will with vinigar." Your comment wasn't in the best intrest because Eric was trying to be human and consoling.
Every one have a good day.

As Christians we are suppose to help meet the physical needs as well as the spiritual needs of people. I think Erik was trying to be helpful with his suggestion and trying to help meet a physical need. I understand Austin, too, in that sometimes Erik's comments have seemed to have an ulterior motive and therefore it is hard to trust and recognize that he does have some good intent. That is God's image coming through Erik loud and clear. May you all have a blessed day and be wearin' the green today so you don't get pinched!

Jerry, I was reminding Erik that this is a place for conversations about Christianity, not a job-search website. This simple isn't the place for that kind of stuff. As for the rest of your comment, you are reading a bit too much in the mere 4 words I wrote to Erik. What I wrote wasn't even close to a "slam." I'd apprieciate in the future if you would avoid apologizing for my comments and reprimanding me for your subjective interpretation of my simple comment.

Okay Austin I apoligize to you if you were not slamming Eric, but the four words that you wrote didn't say anything about this not being a a place to look for a job. Eric didn't tell him to write a resume' he just asked what kind of work did he do and a mentioned that thousands read this site daily. This site has constantly gotten off the beaten path and advice has been given in the past with out anyone saying anything about it as long as it was helpful. Just reading your words I didn't feel it was called for and it seemed Janice may have questioned the intent also, if I am wrong I apoligize to her also. In the future we all need to make ourselves clear as to the meaning of our posts before we hit the send button so nobody else can missinterprete our intent. Again I apoligize.

Thursday, March 19th.

Boy, you miss a lot when you don't go back and check these postings!

Erik, Thanks for the thought. I was a retired banker, until I got bored and bought a high end retail store in Atlanta. Timing was great; 2 months before "9/11". Survived that, but lost a lot of working capital. This lastest economic tsunami, which was totally avoidable, took us down.

Fortunately, I have a good reputation and a lot of experience. As "O" says, a crisis can be an opportunity. Only I think he has something else in mind. I'm praying for wisdom and guidance in sorting through the options.

For most of history, people didn't "retire". They worked their whole life and then died. Think we're going to see that return to "fashion".

Appreciate the prayers. It gives me strength when I know that there are some "prayer warriors" raising up my name.
