Being More Like Jesus Mar 14 2009

"Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness." - Matthew 9:35

One of the things that troubles me about evangelical, Bible-believing churches is the total neglect of one important aspect of Jesus' ministry - healing. Why does this happen? Well, many Christians see exaggerated claims of supernatural healing in some charismatic or Pentecostal churches. Others see charlatan faith-healers on TV and say, "We don't want to be involved with anything like that!" And sadly, in reaction against that some Christians put their major trust for healing with medical science. They forget that doctors have never healed anyone! Doctors may enhance the healing process with the treatment they provide to patients, but only God can heal. Jesus went about teaching, preaching and healing and if the church, the Body of Christ, is to be like Jesus in spirit and character and mission we need to do the same. How?

1) Pray for the sick through prayer meetings, prayer chains, and prayer ministries
2) Have spiritual leaders like elders and ministers pray for the sick by laying hands on them in private or in worship. (James 5:13-16)
3) Ministry of presence: The Body of Christ (not just paid ministerial staff) is to reach out to the sick with love and compassion and encouragement.

If the church is going to be more and more like Jesus - let's not forget the ministry of healing along with sound teaching and gospel preaching.

This is SO true. I have experienced the healing of Jesus so many times, on so many levels, including physical, emotional and spiritual.

I'd encourage readers to check out the following website for a free, online book by a man who brings Biblical inner healing to wounded souls...it's incredible how this simple, yet profound and proven application of forgiveness and prayer has changed the lives of everyone in my family, and countless others.
The author is now offering his book for free, (also for sale) as he, we, know that the church will continue to struggle in trusting God for healing and in other ways, until they are healed at the soul level. "Beloved, I pray that you would prosper and be in good health even as (to the degree to which) your soul prospers!" 3 John 2 I suggest this simply as an offering for those who still struggle with having the faith we all know we're supposed to be living by! Blessings.

Pastor Bryant thanks for today's devotional. You are right in saying that the healing by Jesus is certainly being neglected here. In our own ministry in India we see healing the sick on regular basis. Healing the sick is one of the ways God confirms our presentation of the Gospel among the unreached.
Thank you very much for clarifying this important aspect of Jesus's ministry.
