The Real Joy of Heaven May 05 2009

"The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. For they cannot even die anymore because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." - Luke 20:34-35

Here is a fact that might upset you. There is no sex in heaven. I know what you are thinking… No sex for eternity? Sounds like hell to me!

Before you start to reconsider eternity in heaven, consider the reason for this. Jesus is very clear, there’s no marriage in heaven. And because sex is a gift of God to be enjoyed only in the context of committed love and marriage, then obviously, there would be no sex in heaven. Now I realize that may upset you. But before you start having second thoughts about where you really want to spend eternity, recognize this. The fact that there is no marriage or sex in heaven actually shows us how incredibly awesome heaven is! There will be no need for sexual intimacy with a marriage partner because the joys and of heaven will be so great. So, I hope you are able to recover from your initial reaction and realize that this is actually a reflection of just how incredibly great heaven will truly be.

Yes, report it Nevermind

That fleeting moment we experience during sexual intercourse is a tiny preview of what we can expect in His presence. Eternally. Praise His Name, and all glory to God.

Thank you for this meaningful devotional. I'm sure it was an oversight, but the scripture passage written is actually from Luke 20:34-35, not verse 27b.

OK on the sex, but don't mess with my chicken fried steak, mashed taters, lots of gravy and good iced tea. Oh, and some cajun-style beans and rice, too.

OK. I understand when in heaven but what about when we get to the new earth?

In case anyone is still reading, a positive (though possibly speculative) case can be made that male-female relationships similar to marital bonds can continue between the redeemed into the next life. This may then also imply a romantic, physical or even sexual aspect in such a relationship.

Below are some websites that make this positive case (across Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant strands of Christianity). Each website does deal with the marriage pericope of Mt 22 to a lesser or greater degree -
1. http://rezfamilies.googlepages.com
2. http://www.ewtn.org/library/Marriage/zmarrheavn.htm
3. http://books.google.com.au/books?hl=en&id=YSSCUO1tonkC&dq=meyendorff+marriage%20&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=5NSzvkqo5M&sig%20=hBJchN5_JtqohBFEy0xFHYABFJI#PPA15,M1
Whether you find these arguments convincing is ultimately up to you.

PS. please note according to historic Christian doctrine, the next life involves the resurrection, which is physical in nature, and is not to be identified with "heaven" (where the redeemed go after death to await future physical resurrection of their bodies) - please see this link for more explanation -
