"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me." But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings." - Malachi 3:8
Imagine a dark scene for a moment. After collecting the weekly offerings, the deacons at your church are taking the money into the office when a man sticks a gun in their faces and steals the money. How would you react to something like this? I know how you’d respond; you would be absolutely appalled! You’d be outraged! “How could anyone rob God and rob the church like that?”
Here is the terrible truth to this story. The fact is that most of you reading these words rob God every single week! Now you don’t pull a gun or steal the church safe. You’re probably not skilled as a safecracker, but you rob God just as certainly as if you hacked in to the church’s bank records and transferred the funds to your private Swiss account. How can I say that about you? I don’t. God’s Word does. If we do not bring our tithes (10% of our income) and offerings to the Lord, then we’re robbing God. It is as simple as that. God’s law about tithing is just as clear as man’s laws about stealing. You might never even think about breaking man’s laws on stealing; shouldn’t you show the same respect for God’s laws? Here’s good news from God when we do:
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
Malachi 3:10

Yes, report it NevermindNeed to know more about this storehouse with food in it. I think that is where I need to give ... in order to be under the floodgates of heaven, eh?

Yes, report it NevermindI think that tithing is a complicated and very personal thing. I know that most people inwardly groan when the realize that they are in the pew on stewardship Sunday.
The 10% rule, in my opinion, is a guideline. It is a great discipline to get into from an early age and it will have its rewards.
But, what if a person supports several ministries; say his church home now, the church he/she grew up in and a ministry of Christian service unaffiliated with either of these. Do they give a total of 10%, or 10% to their home church and over and above to the others. Remember, the tithe is to God. These ministries are just conduits.
What of the person who is going through a financial crisis. For several years I have actually been losing substantial amounts of money and having to live off of savings. Am I "exempt"? I think not, but I do give according to a lower standard, because I am really "strapped".
What about the person who receives a great bounty in one year due to unusual circustance and wishes to give more than 10%, because they have so much. Are they "prepaid in their account"? Of course not.
What about "in kind" gifts? A relatively poor carpender might do pro bono work on the church facilities, piano dealer donate a number of pianos for different fellowship areas, or a car dealer might give the church a van.
So, my simple rules is to pray for guidance and to discuss our gifts with my wife and to do what we think would honor God for blessing us so richly in both material and spiritual ways

Yes, report it NevermindMy husband and I have always been very frugal (we were both raised in East cobb, but by parents who appreciate the value of a dollar). However, when it comes to tithing, it's something that we don't even have to think about. We automatically give 10% of our GROSS income the 1st of every month, and God as blessed us abundantly in return. It's biblical. God said to test Him and He will keep His word.

Yes, report it NevermindElizebeth, You are correct in your giving. I had a man ask me, was he supposed to give on his gross or his net. I asked him did he wish to receive net blessings or gross blessings. Our tithe is Gods anyways but we don't give anything untill we go above that. Some have said they can't afford to give ten% but I can't afford not to give it. Be blessed.

Yes, report it NevermindTHIS IS NOT TRUE!
Malachi 3:8 was the old testament view of tithing, it was part of their tax system!
IN THE NEW TESTAMENTS,
now it's all about CHEERFUL GIVING!

Yes, report it NevermindBill, God Himself does not need the physical money for Himself. It is a symbol of your faith, love, and thanks to Him. PLUS He uses the physical money for the church or the ministry to use wisely.
