The Right Values Sep 27 2009
“…I will put my laws upon their hearts, and on their mind I will write them.” - Hebrews 10:16
There’s a lot of talk about values, like family values or traditional values. The cover of Newsweek magazine recently asked the question, “Whose Values?”
Well, let me offer a suggestion; it’s very old but very contemporary. How about the values that come from man’s Creator—from God Himself?
They go like this:
• You shall have no other gods before Me.
• You shall not make for yourself an idol.
• You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
• Remember the Sabbath Day.
• Honor your father and mother.
• You shall not murder.
• You shall not commit adultery.
• You shall not steal.
• You shall not bear false witness.
• You shall not covet.
These are not suggestions to be used when you feel they are appropriate. They are absolute commands. They tell us how to live life to the fullest.
Whose values?
I encourage you to adopt God’s values. You’ll find that they will be a key to living life to the fullest.

Yes, report it NevermindIf we will just stop what we are doing for just a moment and think about these ten commandments and what they are telling us to do, we will realize that if we do them, this world we live in would be 100% better. The first four has to do with God himself, if these were taken away from the picture and we just did the next six ones, we would be able to get along with anyone, they have to do with mankind. Put the first four back in the picture and then we even please God. Even a nonbeliever or an atheist would have to admit that the last six would would help bring about peace in the world. Have a blessed Lord's day.

Yes, report it NevermindI totally agree with this devotion. I do have a question (or several) about the first two commandments. They seem to me to say much the same thing. Is God just stating it in another way a second time to be sure the point gets across to people? Is an idol more specifically a physical representation of a false god? Are the gods spoken of in the first commandment considered to be unseen by human eyes as is our God except for when Jesus walked upon the earth? Now I am like Jenny, full of questions, so if anyone has any thoughts please share so I can have better understanding. Thanks for being an essential part of my spiritual growth, RFTH and all those who post. God bless you all!

Yes, report it NevermindJanice,
The gods in "no other gods before Me" are false gods like the Hindu gods, Buddha, etc...
Whereas some example of idols are money, your job, your family, Hannah Montana, etc...
God bless
