The Paradox of Scientific Thought Jan 29 2010
"They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised." - Romans 1:25
Several years ago, the local school board required high school science textbooks to have a sticker attached. This sticker said simply, "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."
Notice that there was nothing in the sticker that advocated a belief in God. Neither did it even mention Creationism. It simply advised the students to ask questions and form their beliefs based on what they conclude from the evidence. This was really all about good education, about considering different theories with an open mind, which is a part of learning, to be able to consider different outlooks about life. Despite this, the federal courts demanded that these simple stickers be removed from all textbooks.
Education is about the free flow of ideas. When you have a theory as controversial as evolution then certainly part of a good education is considering diverse views. In addition, the scientific method itself demands skepticism and examination. Good science requires that theories stand up to probing questions. Why do evolutionists fear similar questioning? What do they have to fear? Truth has no fear. Is there really any difference with the Nazi book burners and how some scientists, educators, and government officials respond to alternative theories concerning evolution? The mindset is the same.
Open-minded people don't fear the truth - they seek it. And when they truly seek Truth, they find God.

Yes, report it NevermindHmmm wonder who to expect to post on this devotion :-) Still praying for you.

Yes, report it NevermindMy version is:
[1] A paradox is a statement in which it seems that if one part of it is true, the other part of it cannot be true.
[2] If you do something in a scientific way, you do it carefully and thoroughly, using experiments or tests.
It is exactly how Romans 1:25 explains:-
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.

Yes, report it Nevermind"When you have a theory as controversial as evolution"- Evolution is only 'controversial' among uneducated people. It is not controversial to scientists; and we are talking about science classes here. If you want to discuss the "controversy" surrounding evolution that should take place in a history class.
Perhaps we should also advise students in a psychology class that the "theory" of mental illness is just that and should be approached with an open mind. After all, we don't want to offend those who believe in demon possession.
The sticker was unconstitutional. There was no sticker imploring children to keep an open mind about the theory of gravity or the theory that the earth orbits the sun (although in Galileo's time you could be punished by the church for promoting these unbiblical ideas).
How about a warning sticker on bibles stating This book is full of lies, so keep that in mind.

Yes, report it NevermindThis statement is incorrect: "Evolution is only 'controversial' among uneducated people." There are plenty of educated people in all disciplines, including science, that do not believe that Darwin's theory of evolution can explain the diversity of life we see today, not to mention the origin of life.

Yes, report it NevermindMy uneducated brain thinks there is a planet named Erik and that the world revolves around him and his thoughts. My enlightened brain knows there is God and that the world is about Him and His creation and His plan. It is another day that God made, a day to rejoice and be glad in and also another opportunity to pray for Erik (alongside others who are regular to this site). We never know the day or hour when time will be up but while we are given this time we can pray. This was a very good devotion and a reason to be thankful for homeschooling and the opportunity to seek the truth and study more than just one side of issues.

Yes, report it NevermindMy statement is correct.
As reported by Newsweek: "By one count there are some 700 scientists with respectable academic credentials (out of a total of 480,000 U.S. earth and life scientists) who give credence to creation-science, the general theory that complex life forms did not evolve but appeared 'abruptly'."Martz & McDaniel 1987, p. 23
You can find a few crackpots anywhere. I would hardly call this a controversy.
You can find other false claims here:

Or you can watch this helpful creationist video entitled "Atheists Nightmare" featuring respected scientists Ray Comfort Kirk Cameron.

Yes, report it NevermindErik, I know my comment will have little meaning to you but I will say that in homeschooling there is a scientist who is well respected who has written a number of textbooks from the creationist point of view. His name is Dr. Jay Wile. You can check him out on the web if you are interested. We were blessed with finding several instructors who have degrees from well known universities to teach using these textbooks. One of the instructors holds a government job at a well known facility in a scientific field. So just from personal experience I can say that there is current controversy concerning the full acceptance of evolution. I think you may be a bit behind the times in your thinking there is no controversy among scientists.

Yes, report it NevermindI am confused. What does Evolution/Creationism have to do with Romans 1:25? I dare challenge you, with what I understand. Romans 1:25, before this verse & after, is plainly about men (people) pushing away the truth & say's that instinctively men (people) know the truth about God, because God put this knowledge in our hearts. I don't understand where evolution is a related topic?

Yes, report it NevermindErik, you know full well that there are scientists that diagree on this subject and others that just resent having an unproven theory jammed down their throat. I've given you a website for the list of scientists brave enough to voice their doubts and I know you know about it anyway so I'm not going there again. Recently scientists boldly announced they had proof of the missing link in Ida, only to later rather quietly have to admit they were mistaken. There are well respected, very intelligent scientists on both sides of the fence so it is NOT something that we are going to be able to hash out on this website. All I know is that scientists can not begin to even explain how ALL naturally created foods each have a role in fighting some type of different disease in the body. Example- pomogranates have been discovered to be a natural hormone antagonist that works in the body much like the manmade drug tamoxifen. They've discoved that natural fruits and vegetables actually have different roles of fighting disease in people by the color that they are. Seriously do you really really really think that that just happened? Anyway, I've got other things to do other than rehash a subject that you obviously "know everything" about. I am totally moving on from this subject, but will continue to pray for you. God bless

Yes, report it Nevermindpurple416, "the truth of God" in the verse is God's word and when the theory of evolution conflicts with God's word then God's word prevails. Those who are faithful to believe God's word often encounter "authorities" who would require full belief in evolution as the only explanation of how mankind happened to be what we are. They leave no room for God. They push out "the truth of God for a lie". Of course the mature believers do have knowledge of God's truth given to them from God but the young students in school are often taught there is only one way to look at things and it isn't God's way.

Yes, report it NevermindCF & Janice: there are a few scientists that disagree with lots of things. There are credible scientists who believe that 9/11 was an 'inside job.' That doesn't make it a controversy, it just show that there are cranks and crackpots anywhere you go.
If you think the fact that you have anecdotal evidence ("I know a scientist..") means there is a controversy then I can't really see the purpose of discussing it with you further.

Yes, report it NevermindI happen to believe that "science" itself is an evolutionary process. Science is nothing more than man's organized effort to understand God's creation.
For instance, science believes that it has a pretty good understanding of the origin of the universe going all the way back to a few nano-seconds before the so-called "big bang". Then it is at a loss to explain what the pre-existent cause of their explanation was. To say GOD is simply not acceptable to many of them is not acceptable. For many others, it is. Frankly, I don't think we or the scientists have even scratched the surface of what GOD did when he created it all.
The Bible is not a science book. It is a love letter from God. It is intended to lead us back to him through his SON.
Lastly, the scientific answer of 1800 is different than the answer of 2000, and the answer of 2100 will be different as well. God's answer is always the the same: "In the beginning, God created...."

Yes, report it NevermindErik, Can't you treat people respectfully instead of calling people "cranks and crackpots" just because they do not believe as you do? Your disrespectful treatment of people really negates what you have to say.

Yes, report it NevermindJanice: I do not call people cranks and cackpots merely because I disagree with them. Where did you get that idea? I use the terms "cranks" and "crackpots" for people who ARE cranks and crackpots. I'm sorry if that hurts anyone's feelings but I will the truth no matter what.

Yes, report it NevermindErik is quite correct here, of course.
The problems/errors with this devotion are mainly threefold:
1. The school board didn't require SCIENCE textbooks to have the sticker; they required books on EVOLUTION to have the sticker. The issue then becomes, why not put your bogus sticker on all science text books? Why are Christians picking on one particular field of biology? Why not put a similar stickers on say, physics text books, that states "you know, the model of the atom is 'just a theory', please read this with an open mind." I think you can see where this point is going, hopefully.
2. "Evolution is a theory, not a fact." is incorrect. Evolution is actually a fact, not a "theory". It is, however, a scientific theory, but not a "theory" or a "guess." It's shocking how many times this has to be explained to the ignorant and the uneducated with zero progress in the learning department.
3. Evolution is not controversial. No more than any other scientific theory. It's only controversial in non-scientific communities, or in churches.
The federal courts demanded that these simple stickers be removed because Christian lobbyists were trying to spread lies through their ignorance. They were trying to suggest to students that this one branch of science is somehow "flawed" vs. other scientific disciplines. The stickers were trying to suggest that this one branch of science was not on equal footing with Atomic Theory, the Germ Theory of Disease or Gravitational Theory — just to name a very select few. And this is not the case. Thus, the stickers were a lie.
Good science does require that theories stand up to probing questions, for sure. Evolutionists don't fear similar questioning at all, in fact - they WELCOME it. But the truth of the matter is, if evolutionary theory was shown to be bogus, it would be simply replaced with another scientific theory, not Christianity.
Thus your "magic theory" is not an alternative worth any kind of serious debate. But if you want to go on believing the world is 6000+ years old, we came from Adam and Eve, Eve was created from a rib, and Cain mysteriously found a wife, and we are all descendents from such extremely limited DNA, which doesn't even begin to explain the vast diversity of life on the planet, be my guest.

Yes, report it NevermindCF states, "others that just resent having an unproven theory jammed down their throat."
CF, how do you feel about having electrochemistry jammed down your throat? All these crazy assumptions about ion flow, electron movement, and oxidation/reduction without a SHRED OF EVIDENCE! How dare they, hey? How dare they offend your Christian mind with such braizen guesses about how all this unproven stuff works.
It's actually you and your imaginary friends that are jammed down our thoats, if anything.

Yes, report it NevermindOkay, enough arguing and name-calling. We're shutting down comments on this devotion and will just have to agree to disagree. Remember, this is a forum for the exchange of ideas... Thanks and God bless.
