A Magnificent Failure Aug 09 2010

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him; who have been called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28

With only twelve official holidays in the USA, it requires a remarkable occasion or success to have a holiday. We have holidays to celebrate our independence, memorialize our veterans as well as contemplate all the things we are thankful for. We also honor great people and their accomplishments. Holidays are so scarce that all 43 of our presidents have to share a single day! When you think about it, there are only two people who have achieved such distinction that they have their own holiday - Martin Luther King and Christopher Columbus. And you know what is strange about that? Columbus failed!

That's right. Christopher Columbus was on a mission to find a shorter trade route to India but instead he missed it by over nine thousand miles. Nine thousand miles! But from that failure put a spotlight on new lands that motivated future explorers, attracted settlers, and eventually resulted in the creation of great nations. It was one of history's biggest blunders, yet we celebrate the failure every year with one our scarce national holidays.

So, the next time you think you've made a big mistake, think about the legacy of Christopher Columbus. You'll see that God can turn your blunder into some unexpected good.

And in this "It's not a Christian Nation", we have two holiday's honoring Jesus Christ. I would also say that the others honor God's grace or men of great belief that lived their faith. Martin Luther King was a Christian Preacher living out his faith in the teachings and Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Grant, the speech that Dr. King gave about his dream just may be the best speech to have been given in the last 50 years. If you have never read or heard it in its complete form you need too.
