The Bible Always Withstands Scientific Challenges Feb 06 2012

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - John 1:1

Here is something I find interesting about the book of Isaiah. It was written 2700 years ago. Why is that so amazing? Because in 700 BC, the conventional wisdom was that the earth was flat. Not only did the common man think it was flat, but the intellectuals were also convinced of this. (The prevailing scientific theory was that the earth was supported on the back of a giant turtle. What the turtle was standing on has never been fully explored.)

Yet even though all mankind was convinced of the flatness of the earth, note this verse from Isaiah 40:22 "It is He who sits above the circle of the earth."

The word circle would have never been used if a mortal had written that book unassisted. But, God inspired the man that wrote it, ensuring that the Bible was correct in its terminology. The Bible will always withstand scientific challenges thrown at it. In fact, not only has science never proven any part of the Bible wrong, it actually continually proves it to be right.

Not even close to being right.
You really don't want to play this game.

Ancient people believed the earth was circular. A circle is flat. I think what Bryant is looking for is a sphere.

Here is a summary of ancient beliefs from Wikipedia

In early Egyptian[8] and Mesopotamian thought the world was portrayed as a flat disk floating in the ocean. A similar model is found in the Homeric account of the 8th century BCE in which "Okeanos, the personified body of water surrounding the circular surface of the Earth, is the begetter of all life and possibly of all gods."[9]

The Hebrew Bible used poetic language consistent with that of the ancient Middle Eastern cosmology, such as in the Enuma Elish, which described a circular earth with a solid roof, surrounded by water above and below,[10][11] as illustrated by references to the "foundations of the earth" and the "circle of the earth" in the following examples:

* "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."[12]
* "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world."[13]
* "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."[14]

In the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts it is revealed the ancient Egyptians believed Nun (the Ocean) was a circular body surrounding nbwt (a term meaning "dry lands" or "Islands") and therefore believed in a similar Ancient Near Eastern circular earth cosmography surrounded by water.[15][16][17]

And here is a link to the imago mundi- the oldest known 'map' of the world. As you can see it is a circle.

Erik, lighten up. Meaningful life is not contained within the thimble of knowledge we have or the universe of knowledge we don't and can't. Bryant is wrong in this instance. Comparing the spiritual with the material is a leap science cannot contemplate without standing itself on its head, and the Bible serves as a constant reminder of that.

Any person who has ever lived with Active Eyeballs understood the World was not Flat.

Any person who could look off into the Horizon could see there were Mountain Ranges and Valleys...

Some of the Greatest Science Majors in the World were held under the Constraints of their respective Local Divisions within the Visable Church.
---------------------------
The World is much Flatter today than it was in the days of Copernicus, Galileo, and Da Vinci. And it continues to Shrink.

Most of the Great Scientists understood the Church was absolutely Wrong in Maintaining their Flat-Earth Congregations.

The Church would do anything to keep that Alive...
--------------------------
So Bryant is Right--the Scientists(long list)have Proven the Prophet Correct.

They did not Fight It--
They Fought for it...

But in Many, Many Cases--it was the Church fighting the Scientists to Support certain Religious Beliefs and Creeds.

Hey Erik I want you to read this!!!

Yes, the brief mentioning of the socially monogamous prairie voles, and their promiscuous "cousins" (meadow voles) was referencing the lab I worked with this just Recently>

However, as many popular press sources do frequently when writing about science, the author of this CNN article got a few things wrong, or half-right. The study they referenced was not my work, but rather an experiment done in 2004, and showed that infusing a gene that "codes" (creates) the vasopressin 1a receptor (vasopressin has many subtypes of receptors. The 1a receptor is associated with social bonding, and is the specific receptor the article is talking about) infusing this gene that codes for the vasopressin receptor in SPECIFIC brain regions induces social affiliation in promiscuous voles, which is absent when compared to the promiscuous voles in the control group that did not receive the infusion. This "infusion" is known as a viral-vector mediated gene transfer, which is a technique commonly used in labs, and one I will be implementing in my senior thesis later in the year.

Anyway, it was found from that study that the article is referencing that it is NOT the number of vasopressin receptors that is important in facilitating social behavior, but moreso where vasopressin receptors are located--regions of the brain that underlie reward processing, social recognition, spatial memory (remembering where your partner and home is located is pretty important in monogamous species) etc.

I've attached the paper that I wrote recently talking about the research project to which I Contributed.

This project found that unstable DNA sequences upstream or "located before" the coding region (which is responsible for 'creating' that vasopressin receptor) vary between the promiscuous and monogamous voles. These unstable DNA sequences are longer in the monogamous species and shorter in the promiscuous species. We looked at three lines of transgenic mice (all of these mice were genetically identical except for this DNA sequence in the vasopressin 1a gene). One line had the longer monogamous DNA sequence, one line had a shorter version of the longer monogamous DNA sequence(not all members of a monogamous species are monogamous, as humans we know this, so this shorter version of the monogamous DNA sequence accounts for the individual variation naturally seen within a species), and the last line had the shorter, promiscuous DNA sequence. We found that these DNA sequences did in fact predict where vasopressin receptors were located in four regions of the brain important for monogamous behavior"

I understand what you are Saying: I really do and I Apologize for that Remark--It was Out of Place and Line. I don't care who made it. ( I have insulted the Senior Pastor in my remarks about the Fishing and the Lies--I really thought he was Suggesting the Guys were the Liars in Failing Relationships--I took it Personally and I should not have Done That...)

We must Forget This--Even though it isn't a Matter of Life and Death...

I am not trying to Argue with you or find fault with Others...Like Bryant said the Other Day?

Don't argue with a Jackass!!!

You want to call me a Jackass right now? Do it! I will never Post here again...Ever!

He dropped an Absolute Bomb on me in "Think you got away with it?"

Well I didn't and I Won't--I will have to Stand before the Lord some day and Hope to Him?
