A Man After God's Own Heart Aug 28 2007

"I have sinned against the Lord..." - 2 Samuel 12:13

Adultery. Murder. Abuse of power. Do these sound like the actions of someone who would have a special place in God's heart?

Surprisingly, the Bible shows us that King David was a man who found special favor with God, even though he was guilty of all those things. But the Bible also shows us that David recognized his mistakes and called them what they were--sins against God. He asked God's forgiveness and then committed himself to living God's way.

Even though we may not have done the same things that David did, we have all sinned. God's word says, "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." He died to pay the penalty for our sins and to offer us forgiveness.

When you mess up, confess your sin to God just like David did. Ask for God's forgiveness and for strength to resist sin in the future. Anything you say won't be a surprise to Him. He knows everything. But He is the only answer to man's ultimate problem of sin.

David is one of my favorite characters in the Bible and not because of his sins but because of him. If David can enter the gates, we all have a chance! Bless you Pastor Wright.

A friend has several times referred to David and his sins as representative of all men and their bad behaviors. She does not think God was right to forgive David and uses this and other of God's actions to reject the God of the Bible. I feel she has a great loss from not accepting God's forgiveness of David because it is God's generosity of forgiveness for confessed sin that allows us all to know His forgiveness for our sins. God's heart is revealed through His loving treatment of David.

To be fair, it wasn't all David's fault. Sometimes the God of the Bible causes you to sin- just as he caused David to sin (2 Samuel 24:1)- so he can get his jollies by punishing you. Read the whole chapter. It'll blow your mind.

Delayne told me that you wife, Anne, is in the hospital with pneumonia. I have added her to our prayer list and we all pray for her fast recovery.

Also, I want you to know how much your devotionals mean to me each day and I thank you so much. It's a wonderful way to spend a "minute" of my time.

In Him,
Tootsie

Erik - I don't think God gets any "jollies" out of punishing anyone. Anyway - I love the story of David! It reminds me that even though I have my own spiritural failures, as long as I am seeking God and genuine in my repentance, God's grace forgives. I wish I had a heart as amazing as God's!
