Long-Term Consequences of Sin Sep 01 2007
"For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done." - Colossians 3:25
I'm haunted by the biblical story of Sarah and Abraham. God promised them a child to build a great nation. They were past the normal childbearing years, so Sarah had an idea. It was custom in those days that if the husband had a child by his wife's maid, the child could legally be his wife's child. So, Sarah said to Abraham, "Sleep with my maid." He was glad to oblige.
The Egyptian maid had a child. Sarah became insanely jealous and eventually ran the maid and her son off. His name was Ishmael, from which many Arabic people are descendants. Later, God gave Sarah and Abraham a child. He was named Isaac, and from him would come Israel and the Jewish people.
Because Sarah did not trust God's promise, it led to a sibling rivalry between Ishmael and Isaac -- rivalry and animosity that exist to this day in the Middle East between Arabs and Jews.
Sin brings long-term consequences. Let's make it easier on ourselves and others. Let's do things God's way through faith.

Yes, report it NevermindMany times I thought that God needed my help to bring His promises to pass. But I have learning to always wait upon Him. His promises NEVER return void. PRAISE HIM.

Yes, report it NevermindAbsolutely! Don't try to improve upon God's plan, you and your imperfect design will most certainly screw something up.

Yes, report it NevermindWe truly believe that God needs our help to accomplish His mission, and will. What God really requires from us is blind obedience and trust. He knows what's best for all of us.

Yes, report it NevermindDear Bryant,
I thought your devotional was accurate overall; however, I believe you may have mischaracterized Abram. I looked at the NIV, NASB, KJV and MSG and none of the translations indicated Abram was "glad to oblige" Sarah's direction.
You left the impression on me that Abram was some sort of playboy just looking for some good sex.
I think Gen. 16 is a story about two frustrated and confused believers. The bigger story here is that like Adam, Abram let his wife take the lead when temptation was revealed. Sarah needed encouragement not complicity.
On top of that Abram's complicity had long-term impact.
I really appreciate your precision and accuracy in your devotionals. Thanks for taking my comments on this one.
