What Is Your Ultimate Authority For Making Decisions? Sep 27 2007
"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness." - 2 Timothy 3:16
What is your ultimate authority for making important decisions? Is it your knowledge? Intuition? Your experience? is it people you want to please? Is it contemporary culture? Is it a synagogue, church, or certain spiritual leader?
I want to suggest God's Word. God has created you for a purpose. He knows how you work best. The way He speaks through His written Word, and it is perfectly true. It applies to every age, race, and nation.
The Bible is clear on some things like murder, stealing, adultery, and forgiveness. When it doesn't speak to a specific issue--like which mutual funds to invest in, whom to marry, or stem cell research, it gives perfect principles we need to know in order to make the best decisions--those that are pleasing to God.
So try reading it. Start with the New Testament. Ask God to speak to you through His Word. When it comes to living well, God's Word knows best.

Yes, report it NevermindAt least we agree on one thing- it's important to actually READ the Bible. I wonder how many people say they believe that God wrote a book but have never bothered to read it.

Yes, report it NevermindAnd I agree with you Erik. Everyone should at least read the Bible from a literary point of view. Christians should definitely read it. Find a translation that works for your reading style and get started!

Yes, report it NevermindI fully agree, except don't start with the new testament. It's like starting a movie in the middle. Like telling the story of the movie "Gone with the Wind" and starting out "All of Atlanta was on fire....so that's why they had a war?
Starting the Bible story with "there was this baby born in a stable" doesn't make sense either.
You need to know basics like why he's called the Lamb of God. What's the point of dying for anyone? If you don't know the background - starting with who is God and why is he important and "the penalty for sin is death" and what's a lamb got to do with it all, the new testament won't make a lick of sense. Half the story leaves people thinking it's all a fairy tale and has no relevence to anyone. And that's a shame.

Yes, report it NevermindI appreciate your comment Hal. When I was growing up I went to church and got bits and pieces of the Bible but it wasn't until I was older and decided to read through the whole Bible (the Daily Walk Bible put out by Walk Thru the Bible) that I got the whole picture and really came to believe. Yet before then I had made some false starts to reading through the Bible and I would get overwhelmed and quit. It took me two years to get through it but it was worth it. The New Testament is certainly more manageable length wise so people would not feel so overwhelmed. That approach has merit, too, but at least an overview of the Old Testament would be helpful before going directly into the New Testament. I keep reading and learn new things each day because my experiences are new each day and the Bible can be applied to each new need. Keep reading folks and you will be blessed!

Yes, report it NevermindMost people who claim to be believers have never read the Bible and and never will. And the few who do need their hand held by a devotional bible that tells them how what they are reading isn't really what they are reading. I read my old Scofield Bible today and find the commentaries hilarious. I think there are actually a lot of good strategies for starting the Bible but one of my favorites is reading the Gospels side by side. By that I mean read the beginning of Matthew then the beginning of Mark, then Luke, then John. Try to see how each of them tells the story differently according to his agenda. It's a trip.

Yes, report it NevermindThe method of comparison of the Gospels as Erik suggests would be enhanced with usage of the book, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, by J. Dwight Pentecost. It is a serious aid in study and does not make fun of the Gospels. I am thankful for whatever assistance I can receive from those who have gone before me and who have had much in depth study and a gift for relating their interpretation and insight received through their experience with the Word. It is wise to take a respectful attitude when pursuing study of God's Word so you will reap all the rewards which are so much greater than a momentary laugh.

Yes, report it NevermindJanice- it's obvious to me from the care and intelligence with which you post that you don't need J. Dwight Pentecost or anyone else to understand the Gospels. I believe you, yourself, Janice, is more than capable. And when you do begin leaning unto your own understanding you will find it wonderfully empowering and liberating. Believe in yourself. I do, and that means something, seeing as how I don't believe in much.
