The Day America Told The Truth Jan 22 2008

"...every man did what was right in his own eyes." - Judges 17:6

In the book, The Day America Told The Truth, Patterson and Kim found that in every region of the country, 90% of the people believe in God. But when they asked how they made up their mind on issues of right and wrong, they found people do not turn to God or religion to help them decide moral issues. They concluded, "There is absolutely no moral consensus at all."

In other words, people believe there is a God but He has no relevance to their everyday lives. True belief in God is about trust and obedience. We trust Him to know and want the best for us, so we obey His commands and His word. It's radically counter-cultural, but it's the best way to live.

Having Jesus as Lord means loving God enough to trust and obey Him, and loving your neighbor as yourself. It connects God with morality in a way that is good for all.

Great subject for a devotion. The Judges 17:6 quote is a perfect description of moral reasoning in our society. It is all relative...

Most of have better sense than to trust God, who said: "If any man takes a wife, and goes in on her, and detests her, and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, 'I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin..." (Deuteronomy 22:13,14)

"But if ... evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones..." (Deuteronomy 22:20,21)

It is easy for people to say they believe in God (90%) and it seems a positive statement to say, "I believe in God." But in order to recognize a moral dilemma one needs to be familiar with the Bible and God's perspective on an issue. That is where so many fall short. They do not know enough about the Bible to know that God has provided the answers. Then of course there are those who know and just do "what was right in his own eyes." What an excellent devotion to challenge us to always seek out God's perspective when we have to make decisions.

I'm still trying to figure out why Erik is quoting Deuteronomy.

Austin, In a previous devotion about kindness I made a comment that Jesus was kind when He kept the woman from getting stoned for her sin. That was the only thing I could relate Erik's comment back to. I think Erik may have been saying that we should find the inconsistency between the Old and New Testament. The woman would have been stoned for her sin (B.C.)in the Old Testament. God gave Jesus to die to cover sins (on a spiritual level) at a later date for those who would believe in Jesus. When Jesus made a way for the woman in the New Testament to not be stoned it was like a picture of what God would do through the death of Jesus on the cross for all who would obey Him and believe in Jesus. Jesus saved the woman who otherwise would have died and as you know told her to go and sin no more. God is shown to be judgemental of sin and compassionate to those who go His way. I do not think this makes God inconsistent. God can do whatever He wants. Erik, if you read this I do pray that you will find the truth you so desperately want to find. You seem to be caught in a loop that is totally closed to God at the moment.

Ah! Now I get it, Erik and Janice. Quite a few scholars believe the story in John 7:53-8:11 (pericope adulterae) was somehow added to scripture because the most reliable manuscripts do not have that story in them. I tend to believe the scholars. However, I still think the point Janice makes is valid because it is consistant with of all of Jesus's other teachings.

Thank you, Austin, for your diplomatic and wise comment. Thank you, Erik, for helping me learn something. I found the pericope adulterae in the notes of my NET study Bible. Austin summarized the lengthy article well. I have no trouble agreeing with the scholars and also accepting the Bible as truth on which to base my faith in the triune God: the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths(Proverbs 3:5-6)
What about the fear of God? as the Word says "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" and wisdom is the ability to apply the word of God in your life. Think about it (Selah). Kwadwo
