What Is Heaven Like? May 16 2008

"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." - John 14:3

What is heaven like?

The most common image is a place of clouds where people wear white robes and halos, and do nothing except play harps with goofy smiles on their faces. That's a view of heaven that sounds more like hell to me! What a bore!

What is heaven really like? Jesus spoke very little of it, but He did say this, "In My Father's house are many dwelling places. I go to prepare a place for you." What is heaven like? It's like home, with a loving Father. It's a place of security, a permanent place to live, and a place of refuge. There's a longing within all of us to find home. Heaven is like home with a Father and loved ones as they're supposed to be.

How can you be sure you'll get to that home? Is there a map or rules to follow? No, it comes through a person, Jesus Christ Himself. As He talked about a heavenly home, He added that He is the only way for us to truly come home.

Wow! Couldn't agree more with these comments. Heaven is SO much more a state of mind/being than a place. To most guys, the thought of floating around on clouds wearing some form of celestial diapers and playing harps for eternity is down right scary and a huge turn off! No, heaven is gonna feel like home, the best feelings we've ever had and can ever imagine. A place where we want to go and be with our loving Father forever! Yea!

I have never thought of Heaven as a state of mind, but it is a thought. I have leaned more towards the actual physical place of being. The Bible speaks of streets of gold, walls of jasper, gates of pearl, trees which we can eat from and dwelling places the likes that we have never seen. But the most important fact of all is the presence of our Lord and Saviour. Without Christ being there then it would be like hell to me. We don't have to worry about that because he promised us that we would be together. That is what should propell us to live for him and to follow his teachings and I hope we are doing this today. God Bless all

I am so looking forward to the place HE has prepared for me - I can't even begin to imagine what it'll be like, but I am certainly looking forward to it. I'M READY! I will be so glad that there will be no more pain, no more sorrow and nothing but LOVE all around. How awesome that will be. I can't wait to see Jesus face to face and spend eternity with Him!

I just wanted to say that this is just my second time commenting, but I've been reading these devotions for a few months and I love them. If you'd like to see my first comment and learn a little bit about me, you can look on the May 10th Devotion "The Bible". I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart, mind, soul and strength!! : )

It is such a comfort to know that no matter what, heaven awaits. I believe, like Jerry, it is the place described in the Bible. One of my favorite thoughts about heaven is that it will be a place where all are like-minded in their love for Jesus and God. I believe it will be either a place where we will be given understanding of the "why?s" we have in life or else the "why?s" will all be dissolved. Maybe with your knowledge of the Bible, Jerry, you know if this is the case or not. A great book about the subject of heaven is 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN BY Don Piper. You will feel blessed by reading it. Thanks John and Dara for adding your valuable comments.

"streets of gold, walls of jasper, gates of pearl"

Sounds like Las Vegas. No thanks.

Gold, jasper, pearl, etc. are all found in nature and glorify God as the Creator whereas Las Vegas is full of neon lights which definitely draw attention but to man's diversions rather than to God's glory. I feel like God has taken some of His favorite creations of beauty in nature to use for construction in heaven. Erik, Las Vegas may be heaven on earth to some but it sure isn't God's heaven. Hope to see you in God's heaven some day!

Eric, to go there you have to make a choice between following Christ or to do nothing. If you choose to do nothing then congratulations you do not have to worry about going there. You don't even have to worry about going anywhere else either. That place does not exist either to here you tell your belief, so just sit back and take life easy and live it to the fullest. When you die that will be all there is so don't bother your self and you will get what you want. That is to not go to Heaven. I don't want to tell you that hell is real because you have made it clear you do not believe in it. I will tell others that it is real, and that when the lost are judged that is their final destination. Eric, don't read any of this because you have made it clear that you don't believe in any of the things we believe in. So every one but Eric needs to make a choice in life, do you want to go to heaven or do you want to chance that there is no real place called hell. Eric there is no need posting again, we all know how you feel and we have expressed our concern for your salvation and we will still continue to pray for you but don't waste your time posting, I know you are a very busy person and you don't need to concern yourself with something you don't even believe in. Have a great weekend and may God bless you.

I haven't seen heaven or hell, but I trust through Jesus, my Savior, I will live with Him and my family, friends, and all of my new family in Christ in heaven forever. What a promise that only Christ can make, because He died to save us, even me!

Erik, you are in my heart. I pray your cynical heart will melt & accept Him. I want you to be my family in heaven too. God bless you!

Ha! Sounds like Vegas - not my decorating style either, Erik. It also sounds like Donald Trump's NY penthouse.

Whatever heaven looks like, I'm sure it will be just right. And I'm sure it will be a physical reality - "God seems to like matter - He invented it (CS Lewis)."
