Knowing the Mind of God
"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
Stephen Hawking, author of A Brief History of Time, may be the most brilliant man of the 20th century. Even Einstein would have a tough time beating him in an IQ test. As a physicist, Hawking has dedicated his life to searching for a single mathematical formula that would explain all the forces of the universe. This formula is referred to as the "unified theory" because it would unite all we know about the forces that define the universe. Hawking explains his pursuit by saying that discovering this unified theory would be "the ultimate triumph of human reason" because then we would "know the mind of God."
Although Hawking might someday discover the unified theory, none of us will ever know the mind of God. A human truly coming to know the mind of God would be similar to teaching a canary to perform brain surgery. The bird has no comprehension of the subject, cannot be shown any procedure, and indeed, isn't even aware of the existence of the concept of medicine.
The gap between the mind of God and the mind of man is so much greater than between a canary and a brain surgeon. Even if any of us do make a brilliant scientific discovery, we will have only scratched the surface of God's knowledge. Knowing the mind of God? Through prayer and reading His Word, we can know Christ, who IS the mind of God. Get to know Him and you'll know enough.

Read Hawking's book, The Universe in a Nutshell. The more you read, the more you will be amaised at how much the early scriptures reveal. Things that we could not know until know are talked about. With time lines and dimentions, recall "He is, He was, and He will be.....
With matter, the whole universe is carbon, silica, and hydrogen....and man was made from the same as the soil. Scientifically correct. - Hal
The more science discovers, the more a personal and transcendent creator appears to be the best explanation as to why we are here. It wasn't so long ago that science thought the universe was eternal and uncaused, and a cell was not much more than a blob of jelly. Scientific theories had already done away with God for many, and they were confident at the time that additional discovery would support those theories and remove all doubt for others. It has been just the opposite. Cosmological discoveries clearly point to the beginning of space and time, and biological discoveries scream design as we can see the complexity of even the simplest living things, without alleviating the dilemma of how life began. It must be harder than ever to have the "faith" needed to believe that we are all here by accident. - RickY
I just finished reading "The Language of God". The author was the head of the project to map the human genome. He went from atheist to Christian, while finding complete harmony between science and God. I would recommend it to any "layman" who gets tired of the Darwinist atheists who look down their noses at believers. Augustine, for instance, is one among many great Christian minds that saw science as the door to seeing God's magnificance even more clearly. - G-man

Eric, He is an evolutionist that believes in the God of Creation. I am not a "new earth" guy. I have no problem reconciling science with God. In fact, without God the intricacies of what we are learning simply cannot be explained. Random selection just won't work mathematically. I have opened my mind. You need to open your soul. - G-man

Eric, All Collins says is that the evidence points to a common ancestor. He also quotes C.S. Lewis in allowing for the introduction of a "soul" into a number of specially selected (created) beings that were poetically then "God breated". Again, if you are only going to read to "prove Darwin" then you are missing the point. Collins point is that God created everything from nothing in a way that can only be understood by our limited minds to a point. The more we think we "learn" the more questions we create. You need to accept that only God could do this. Collins has, and we both agree that it's the God of the Christian faith. Read for understanding; not for debating points. - G-man
