Dad's Greatest Priorities Jul 26 2007

"Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." - Genesis 33:5

Let's take a moment to remember the Bible's three greatest priorities for Dads:

1. Husbands, love your wives. (Ephesians 5:25). The best way to be a good father is to be a loving husband. Our children need that more than anything. Remember, the Biblical word for love means more than a feeling, it means a commitment.

2. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger. (Ephesians 6:4). Every child's psyche is fragile. We dads can expect too much at times and come down too hard on them. Worst of all, we can shut out our kids emotionally. We are to build them up and not destroy the spirit and self-image of our children.

3. Bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4). To do this, we need to be godly men who know the Book, who live it, and teach it to our kids. Kids need to know their boundaries. It gives them security. They also need instruction and teaching on what is right and wrong.

To sum it up, the best fathers love their wives, their kids, and the Lord. Fathers, may this be our goal every single day.

How do you know these are the three "greatest" priorities? Where are they prioritized in Scripture?
What about Proverbs 13:24, 19:18, and 22:15? Three verses which encourage us to beat our children regularly. Sounds like a priority, don't you think?

Hey Erik,
I saw your other e-mail on yesterday's devotion and it's unfortunate you have no compassion for others who are hurting or like to read these devotionals. If you do not have anything of value to add, please stop commenting. It's not funny and this is not the forum for that. Thanks.

The rod was used by the shepherds to guide the sheep in the direction they needed to go. Discipline means to train, leading to self-discipline.

Yes, and guiding is a huge part of training and teaching discipline.

I was reading your Devotion here this morning enjoying it all till I
got to the bottom. Where it says......
To sum it up, the best fathers love their wives, their kids, and the
Lord. Fathers, may this be our goal every single day.

ARE WE NOT TO SHOW GOD COMES FIRST IN OUR LIVES.? READING THIS DOES NOT
SEND OR GIVE THE MESSAGE TO ONE READING THAT GOD IS FIRST ....THE MAN IS
PUTTING HIS WIFE AND KIDS FIRST. GOD THE FATHER BEING LAST. FOLLOW WHAT
I AM SAYING.? NOW, THAT WOULD NOT BE PLEASING TO OUR FATHER. GOD IS
TO BE #1 ALWAYS.

Thanks for all your Devotions you do send. Make yourself a Son-filled
day and sure to Shine.

Matt: I have plenty of compassion for the people here. That's why I am posting. Erik chasteneth whom he loves.

Melanie: Nice try. The word for "rod" is shebet. From Gesenius's Hebrew Lexicon: "specially used for beating or striking". I wonder what other lies you've been told.

Bobbi, I did not feel the devotional prioritized family members over God. Clearly, the fathers spoken of have room in their hearts to love wife, kids and the Lord. By the father's love of the Lord he is made able to properly love the other people in his life. It is a good devotion and a challenge for fathers to always do their best helped along by the work of God in their lives.

Well Erik, could have fooled me. You obviously are well versed and above normal intelligence but this probably is not the right place to showcase that. If you show love by insulting another and putting yourself above them, you need to re-evaluate your methods.

Judge not, Matt. Instead of attacking me though, why not answer the question I posed. Where does it say in Scripture that these are God's priorities for fathers?? Why ignore the very clear and emphatic instructions given in Proverbs?
